Antigua

Antigua is the Caribbean Island that I’ve sold the most often and had the best feedback on over the last few years, so I was curious to stay there myself and visit several of the hotels on the island.

I travelled to Antigua on a fact-finding visit in February 2024, flying with Virgin Atlantic. I flew out in economy and back in premium economy for a bit more comfort on the overnight flight.

I stayed at Carlisle Bay and Curtain Bluff and travelled around the whole island, also visiting 4 other hotels; Hermitage Bay, Galley Bay, Blue Waters, and The Inn at English Harbour. These were all excellent properties in stunning locations, and each one had it’s own unique selling points that would appeal to different clients.

I had a fantastic week; I enjoyed incredible locally sourced food, as well as delicious cocktails and wines. During the week, I was entertained by local musicians, tried water sports and spent many hours inspecting a wide variety of rooms and suites in each hotel. Above all I experienced the best and friendliest service I’ve ever had in over 40 years in travel at one particular hotel, Curtain Bluff. That being said, it wouldn’t suit everybody.

My role is always to select and recommend the hotel and resort that I think would suit each individual client. I base this on many factors, including how independent they like to be, what inclusions are particularly important to them, and of course budget. Visiting hotels is a vital part of my profession and this trip in particular was incredibly useful as I had never been to Antigua before and this was my first trip to the Caribbean for several years.

I’m not normally a fan of beach holidays – I prefer lakes & mountains, cities, and multi-centre adventures – but if anywhere was ever going to change my mind, make me stop and relax for a few days, it was Antigua. Overall, if you are looking for a luxury winter sun break, with fabulous people and gorgeous hotels, Antigua is the perfect choice.
